Frequently Asked Questions

What happens during a power outage?

When your system detects the absence of utility-provided power for more than 5-10 seconds, the generator starts up. After start up, the system transfers power to the house in place of utility power. When utility starts back up, the switch back is very smooth- in most cases you won’t even notice.

How are generators fueled?

Most modern residential generators have one of two possible fuel sources: propane or natural gas.

  • Propane is stored in an external tank on the property, which must be monitored and refilled when levels are below 30% full.
  • Natural gas is supplied via the same lines which supply your house; these are run underground to the generator location.

A few older generators are diesel-fueled, but this is rare for new installations.

Can HomeSquare take care of everything for our generator installation?

Yes! From the initial estimate through purchase, permitting, installation, and even ongoing maintenance, our team of expert pros can handle everything for you. It can be a complex process, and we’ve designed our service to make it simple for you.

What size generator do I need?

The size generator appropriate for your home will vary, but most residential systems are in the 20 – 24 kilowatt range.

How much does a system cost, all in?

Costs for a generator backup power system vary with wattage, site complexity, etc., but generally run between $10-17,000 all in.

Is the generator loud?

It’s relative! You will hear it, but would you rather hear your neighbor’s generator, or your own? Many of our clients have told us they like to hear their generators kick in; it becomes a reassuring sign of your home’s resilience.

Is there an app?

A few brands are now producing generators with wifi connection, so you can see the performance of your system live!
