How Often Should My Gutters Be Cleaned?

The frequency of cleaning will be determined by the amount of deciduous trees around your house, the weather, and season. Generally, HomeSquare recommends two cleanings per year: once in the fall and again in the spring.

If you clean your own gutters, be sure to use ladders with standoffs like ours, so that the weight of you + the ladder doesn’t crush the gutters.

The fall cleaning is a no brainer, as it’s simply a matter of waiting until the trees are bare of leaves. Timing can be a little tricky if there are early snowfalls, but we’re happy to accommodate your schedule. Some homeowners opt for multiple gutter cleanings during autumn, especially when their properties boast a large number of trees.

After snow melts in the spring, it’s important to give the gutters another cleaning. Winter is a time when a large amount of debris accumulates on the roof, including errant leaves and twigs blown around by wind storms. Frequently this will collect in unmelted snow on roof, and then when the weather warms everything ends up in the gutter. Too much debris and the gutters will cease to function- that’s when the trouble begins.

How Clogged Gutters Damage Homes

There are a number of ways in which clogged gutters can cause damage to your property, including:

  • Foundation damage
  • Wood damage
  • Ice dams
  • Landscape

The root of each of these is the presence of excess water, building up on a part of your house or its surroundings. The design of your home’s external drainage system probably includes a sloped waterproof roof, gutters, downspouts, boots, and diverters — all of which are important components working together to drain the water away from the structure in a controlled way. The gutters are most prone to failure, and need annual attention to ensure their proper function. Whether you clean them yourself or hire a professional, this is one home maintenance task you don’t want to skip!
