I remember buying my first home. It was a rollercoaster of emotions. From excitement to anxiety and then relief. Now it was finally time to move in. I got some great advice that in hindsight, really helped start me off on the right foot. It boils down to patience and planning. Before you jump in, if you can take a step back and focus on setting yourself up for success as a new homeowner first, you’ll thank yourself later.
I am a person willing to tackle small home improvement jobs around the house as long as it involves no tools beyond a hammer or a paintbrush. My Number One Rule: I definitely draw the line at taking on anything electrical out of what I consider a not-unreasonable fear of electrocution or electrocuting anyone else.

No one can deny that the internet has been a huge boon for homeowners needing local service providers. Using your favorite search engine, in seconds you can find and connect with a wealth of local options for anything from “pet sitting” to “the best blow dry spot”. Home services like handyman, painters, and locksmiths are especially common searches. But local listings for services like these have become one more way that dishonest scammers have exploited the system to dupe unsuspecting customers and benefit themselves. Just because a business lists a phone number, a website, or a physical address doesn’t make it legitimate. The old maxim must now be updated to “Don’t believe everything you read on the internet“!
